Roget’s Thesaurus, with its extensive lists of words, their synonyms and associated phrases, has been an essential companion to writers, academics, students and journalists, and on the bookshelves in the homes of half the English-speaking world, for almost two centuries.

However what very few people realise is that its creator, Peter Mark Roget, who was a multi-talented surgeon, scientist, writer and thinker,  began compiling his opus while living and working in Manchester, where he was also the very first secretary, in 1806, of the esteemed neo-classical Portico Library on Mosley Street. 

And my poster celebrates this little-known fact, while, of course, celebrating Manchester!
