All-weather aluminium posters - for the garden, kitchen or bathroom

The posters I have completed since the start of the year.

The garden centres may be out of bounds - for now - but while you may not be able to buy flowers or plants for your garden, you can buy one of my posters.

I am now producing them in weather resistant, heavy-duty aluminium (di-bond for the technical), which you can hang on walls or fences, or in those damper places in your house, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Anthony and Jane in Davenport, Stockport, have just ordered four (Manc-hattan, Stockport pyramid, Marple and Davenport), and they now proudly adorn their garden fence.

I was born in central Manchester and lived, until the age of six, just off Parrs Wood Road in Burnage. So it’s quite poignant in a way that I should be returning to the area, at Parrs Wood School on Saturday for the Christmas Fair. And to mark the occasion I’ve produced a special edition of my Manchester Alphabet, which now features Parrs Wood under P and in the headline.

Manchester Alphabet, featuring Parrs Wood

This is a party political blog on behalf of all parties

Welcome to the party!

I’ve never considered my posters to be political. Always wanted to spread a bit of fun rather than get people’s knickers in a twist.

However, I recently looked at my market stall and realised that there is something there for people across the political spectrum, albeit unintentionally (apart from one) by me.

So there’s the Northern Mother poster - which has been flying recently - and ardent socialists could read whatever they want to in that. Social realism, heroic Soviet-era pose. Man the barricades with Jeremy!

Then there’s the Manc-hattan poster, which could be viewed as a homage to capitalism, with those giant Deansgate skyscrapers, and Willie Gladstone in the foreground. More phallic conservatism than you can shake a Boris plonker at! G&Ts all round!

And that brings me to the Lib-dems, who no one can possible hate but who neither can most people get passionate about. Goodwill to all men, women, children, dogs, non-binary, sexually-fluid hamsters, you name it. A sort of Christmassy type vibe then, reflected in my Mancunian Christmas card. Raise your egg-nog glasses to that!

Finally, there’s the Manchester Manifesto, which is political, but in a non-party way. Power to Manchester!

So take your pick, cast your vote and keep your fingers crossed!

By the way, the Northern Mother poster is a tribute to my late mum, and the dedication reads:

Dedicated to Annie Jackson. Born in Ardwick, Manchester, shortly after the First World War, served with the armed forces during the Second World War, married the boy next door, had five kids, two of them stillborn, widowed before she was 40, brought up her children while working as a waitress in a factory, final weekly pay packet £32. Died of cancer aged 62. Heroine. Lady. Dancer. Worker. Fighter.

Hats off to award-winning Hatters

My Stockport poster takes cover design of the year

One of my works has helped a Stockport firm win a national award.

Hatters, a leading North West promotional merchandise company based in Heaviley, won the  cover design of the  year at the Advantage Group brochure launch event with an adaptation of my Hats off to Stockport poster. 

The finishing touches were done by Future Design, another Stockport-based company.

Hosted at the 4-star Georgian country house hotel Sopwell House, the Advantage Group brochure launch takes place annually, bringing together merchandise distributors from across the country.

Hatters has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it seemed fitting that it should be marked by an image of the iconic Battersby Hat Works in Offerton - a symbol of Stockport’s industrial heritage.

Founded in 1994 by Managing Director Jo Shippen, Hatters has grown year on year and has worked with scores of national and blue-chip brands.

It specialises in promotional merchandise, print management and product fulfilment – including ordering of stock, storage and delivery.

Jo Shippen said: “I’m delighted that Hatters has been recognised for the brochure cover this year.”

 “It means a lot to me – and the team, that it has coincided with our 25th anniversary and I couldn’t be prouder to be celebrating our milestone achievement in this way.”

 “We couldn’t have done this without Eric Jackson from Statement Artworks and the team at Future Design for pulling it all together for us. It’s truly been a team effort.”

Make mine a double! 

My work has just gone into another two fine pubs, on opposite sides of Manchester. The newly extended White Lion in Wrightington, close to Wigan, has put up five of my framed A3s posters - Lancashire, Northern Powerhouse, Wigan, Worsley and Eccles - while south of the city, in Stockport, the Blossoms pubs has put up my Stockport Alphabet A3 framed.

And as a lover of great beer and great pubs, that makes me very happy indeed!

Vimto poster at Vimto HQ

Like all true Mancunians, I love Vimto - so much better than that Ribena stuff, which is only fit for Southern softies.

So imagine my delight when I got a commission from one of the Vimto family to paint a poster which reflects the company’s unique appeal not just in Manchester but across the world and especially in the Middle East.

The company was created by the Nichols family in Manchester, and remains in the family to this day, hence the headline Nichols and dimes to show how successful it has been.

Here is me presenting the framed poster to Vimto’s Commercial Controller James Nichols at the company’s headquarters in Newton-Le-Willows.

Such an honour!

A Manchester Odyssey!

When Lawrence and Rebecca Cray came to buy some posters off me at Urmston market, they couldn’t make up their minds about which ones to buy. They had lived in Worsley and Eccles, and also close to the Mancunian Way. Now they were living in Urmston. I’d done posters of all those places, even one featuring the Mancunian Way, but they were torn.

So hey, bingo, they thought they would have all four in one! The Result is the Manchester Odyssey of the Crays, where I’ve melded all four posters into one with new typography.

The poster is now taking pride of place in their living room above the fireplace.

So now you know - if you want anything bespoke, just ask. I can’t change the background images but I can do anything with the words.

Exciting news for Statement Artworks. I am one of the first artists in the country to be signed up to the Co-op's brand new local.co.uk website, which is now live (www.local.co.uk). Manchester is the pilot city but the site will soon be rolled out across the country. Most of my images are on the site, in A3 poster and A4 mount options, and you can buy directly through the Co-op. You can buy from me still at markets, and this weekend I am at Stockport and the Northern Quarter, while on Tuesday I have a stall at Victoria Station. My two latest images will be on sale, plus an adaped version of my Offerton poster, which now has Stockport as the banner. That, along with lots of other images, will soon be for sale at the Hat Works Museum in Stockport and at Staircase House.
